Schmallenberg virus (SBV) infection was first identified in the UK in 2012; following outbreaks during 2011 in northern Europe with signs of pyrexia, milk drop and diarrhoea in dairy cows, and later the birth of lambs, and calves, with congenital deformities. In the subsequent three years, there were fewer cases in the UK and then an increase of similar disease in 2016/2017. Since then, surveillance data analysed by APHA has shown peaks in three-to-five-year cycles, with a very large outbreak in 2023/4. This presentation will cover the following aspects of this disease:
- Aetiology and epidemiology
- Distribution
- Clinical signs
- Intra-uterine infection
- Diagnosis
- Differentials
- Surveillance data and data from the 23/24 outbreak
- Impact of the disease
- Genotyping
- Early warning/detection
- Control
- Unknowns
