Gail is an Animal Health Officer (AHO) for the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA), based within the Port of Dover. She has been an AHO since July 2000 and is currently managing a team of 7 portal AHOs.
Gail’s current job role is to enforce animal health and welfare legislation at the ports and airports within the South East, including Dover, Coquelles, Newhaven, Ramsgate and Harwich.
Her role includes regulatory checks on the import and export movements of animals, ensuring compliance with health certification and welfare in transport legislation. She is also actively involved with attempting to interrupt illegal puppy trade through the ports.
Gail has a background as a riding instructor and has always enjoyed owning and riding horses. She lived abroad, returning before the Pet Travel Scheme (PETS) had started, meaning that the family dog had to do 6 months’ quarantine. She therefore took on the role of Portal Animal Health Officer when PETS was introduced, in the belief of its benefit for much-loved family pets.
